´”Designed for an unpredictable future”
- adaptable to new technology
- adaptable to new treatments
- adaptable to new challenges, e.g. from pandemics
The FlexHospital™ concept enables quick adaptation to future opportunities as well as to future threats. This is essential in view of the rapid development of medico-technical equipment and the frequent changes within healthcare. Thus pandemics like the present one caused by corona vira, demands a high degree of flexibility and rapid changes of available services.
The FlexHospital concept is based on a docking station structure which can be filled with functional modules in a “plug and play” fashion, just as drawers in a dresser. Whereas the docking station structure is built on site, modules are built, equipped, tested and approved off site and transported to the hospital site where they are inserted into the docking station, ready for use after necessary connections have been made. Changes to counter new possibilities or threats are performed within weeks – not months or years. A 3D-model using virtual reality techniques is now available to demonstrate key aspects of the FlexHospital design.
The FlexHospital concept is sustainable and results in CO2reductions. All materials are classified according to sustainability and CO2 reduction requirements, and all installations are targeted to result in savings and efficiency. Old modules are recycled and used again and again since they can be revitalized by new surface treatments of floor, roof and walls, and by installations of new equipment.
The FlexHospital concept is based on Danish experience from the shipbuilding industry at the Lindoe Steelship Yard with a special view to flexibility, as well as to the interplay between on-site and off-site production technology, logistics and industrial quality.
FlexHospital has the following advantages for hospital owners and daily OM managers:
| Parameter | Conventional hospitals | Flexhospital |
| Yearly production efficiency | + 2- 3 % (process optimizing) | +3 -5 % (process optimizing + layout optimizing) |
| Up time (”OEE”) | 90% of available time | 99% of available time |
| Constrution time (from digging for base unit till usage) | 5-6 år | 18 -24 months |
| Change of modules | Months No recycling | Days Recycling |
| Total cost + Initial cost + maintenance | Index 100 | Index 80 |
In order to cater for the FlexHospital concept and to develop it further into a viable business concept, FlexHospital A/S (FHAS), a Danish limited company was registered on February 1st, 2021. The Board of Directors contains a former director at the Lindoe Steelship Yard, dedicated engineers and a mathematician and has established a network of professionals with complementary skills and experiences. For further information, consult the chairman of FHAS, Civil Engineer Søren Koch, soren@flexhospital.dk.
